Shopify vs Shopify Plus: Is Plus Worth It in 2026?
Shopify Plus costs roughly ten times the Advanced plan and gives you B2B, unlimited staff accounts, expansion stores, checkout customisation and the ability to run your own custom Shopify Functions. For most UK brands the honest answer is that Plus becomes worth it somewhere between £1M and £3M in annual revenue — and the deciding factor is almost never the features list.
Here’s what Plus costs, what it unlocks, and how to work out whether you’re there yet.
What Plus costs
Shopify publishes Plus at $2,300 per month on a three-year term, or from $2,500 per month on a one-year term. In sterling that’s roughly £1,800–£2,000, though UK pricing is quote-based and you should confirm your own figure with Shopify.
The part that catches people out: above a high revenue threshold, Plus switches from a flat fee to a variable platform fee calculated as a percentage of your sales. Shopify’s own pricing page describes this as an option for “more complex, higher volume businesses.” Shopify does not publish the threshold or the percentage — those are set in the sales process and vary by business model, so treat any specific figure you read online as approximate.
Two practical consequences. First, if you’re growing quickly, model the variable fee before signing a three-year term, because the flat rate you’re quoted may not be the rate you pay in year two. Second, Plus pricing is more negotiable than most merchants assume, particularly at higher volumes or for multi-store setups.
Bundled with the subscription: your main store plus nine expansion stores. Additional expansion stores are charged separately.
What Plus unlocks
Set aside the marketing. These are the things you cannot do on Advanced:
B2B on Shopify. Company accounts, customer-specific catalogues and price lists, payment terms, quantity rules and approval workflows — running natively alongside your DTC store rather than through a third-party app. For any brand with a wholesale channel this is frequently the entire business case on its own.
Custom Shopify Functions. This one is widely misunderstood. Any store on any plan can install a public app from the App Store that contains Functions. Only Plus stores can run a custom app containing Shopify Function APIs — meaning bespoke discount, shipping or payment logic built specifically for your business. If your pricing rules are unusual, this is a hard gate.
Checkout customisation. Checkout UI extensions, branding control, and post-purchase extensions on the thank-you page. Non-Plus stores get a much narrower set of controls.
Carrier Service API. Real-time custom shipping rates calculated by your own system rather than by Shopify’s rate tables. Plus-only, and a genuine blocker for merchants with complex freight or dimensional pricing.
Expansion stores. Nine additional storefronts included, for separate regions, brands or B2B channels.
Shopify Flow at scale, POS Pro, unlimited staff accounts, headless via Shopify APIs, and priority support.
The features people wrongly believe are Plus-only
Worth knowing before you upgrade for the wrong reason:
- Multi-currency selling is available on all plans through Shopify Payments.
- Shopify Markets for international selling is not Plus-gated.
- Shopify Flow is available beyond Plus.
- Public Functions apps — volume discounts, tiered pricing, delivery customisation — run on any plan via the App Store.
- Headless storefronts can be built on non-Plus plans using the Storefront API.
If your reason for upgrading is on that list, you may be about to spend £20,000 a year on something you already have.
The break-even
There’s no clean arithmetic here the way there is between Basic and Grow, because Plus isn’t primarily a discount on card rates. It’s a capability purchase. But there are three tests that give you a real answer.
Test one: does a Plus-gated capability unblock revenue? If you have a wholesale channel being run on spreadsheets, or shipping logic that native rates can’t express, or pricing rules that need a custom Function — then Plus isn’t a cost, it’s the thing standing between you and a working operation. Cost the alternative: the apps, the manual process, the staff hours. That comparison usually settles it.
Test two: what is £20,000+ a year as a share of gross profit? At £5M in revenue on a 30% gross margin, the Plus fee is roughly 0.4% of gross profit — immaterial. At £800k revenue on the same margin, it’s around 8%, which is a very different conversation. Somewhere between those two the answer flips, and where it flips depends on your margin, not just your turnover.
Test three: will you use it? The brands that get value from Plus are the ones using Flow heavily for operational automation, running expansion stores, testing at checkout, or operating a real B2B channel. Brands that upgrade for the badge and keep using the platform exactly as before have simply made their P&L worse.
When to stay on Advanced
Stay if: your wholesale is small enough to run through a B2B app; your discount logic is covered by public Functions apps from the App Store; you’re on one storefront in one or two markets; and nobody on your team can name a specific thing Advanced is stopping them doing.
That describes a large number of UK stores doing £1M–£3M, and there is nothing wrong with it. Advanced at £259 a month with a well-chosen app stack is a capable setup.
When to move sooner than the revenue suggests
Move earlier if you have a wholesale channel that’s growing faster than DTC. B2B on Shopify is the single strongest reason to upgrade below the usual revenue threshold, because the alternative — apps plus manual process plus a separate wholesale site — costs more than the subscription and breaks more often.
Also move earlier if you’re planning a replatform anyway. Migrating twice is far more expensive than migrating once to the right tier.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Shopify Plus per month in the UK? Around £1,800–£2,000, based on Shopify’s published rates of $2,300/month on a three-year term and from $2,500/month on a one-year term. UK pricing is quote-based, so confirm directly.
What revenue do you need for Shopify Plus? There’s no official minimum. In practice the upgrade starts making commercial sense between £1M and £3M in annual revenue, earlier if you have a B2B channel.
Does Shopify Plus have lower transaction fees? Yes — Plus merchants get Shopify’s best available card rates, negotiated as part of the contract. The saving is real but rarely large enough to justify the upgrade on its own.
Is Shopify Plus negotiable? More than most merchants expect, particularly on multi-year terms, multi-store setups, or at higher volumes. Quarter-end and year-end are the usual moments of flexibility.
Can I downgrade from Plus? Yes, but you’ll lose the Plus-gated features immediately — custom Functions apps, checkout extensibility, expansion stores, B2B — which may mean rebuilding functionality. Contract terms also apply. Downgrading is considerably more disruptive than upgrading.
Does Shopify Plus include B2B? Yes. B2B on Shopify is native to Plus and is frequently the strongest single reason to upgrade.
Do I need Plus for headless? No. Headless storefronts can be built on standard plans using the Storefront API. Plus adds scale and support, not access.
What’s the difference between Advanced and Plus? Advanced is the top standard plan at £259/month. Plus adds B2B, custom Functions apps, checkout customisation, expansion stores, the Carrier Service API, unlimited staff and priority support — for roughly ten times the price.
Is there a contract? Yes. Plus is sold on one-year or three-year terms, with the three-year term priced lower. Weigh the discount against being locked in through a period when your requirements may change.
How long does a Plus migration take? If you’re already on Shopify, upgrading the plan is quick — but rebuilding to use Plus features (B2B setup, custom Functions, checkout extensions) is a project of six to sixteen weeks. Coming from another platform, see our migration guide.
